Humans do not always act selfishly: social identity and helping in emergency evacuation simulation

چکیده
To monitor and predict the behaviour of a crowd, it is imperative that the technology used is based on an accurate understanding of crowd psychology. However, most simulations of evacuation scenarios rely on outdated assumptions about the way people behave or only consider the locomotion of pedestrian movement. We present a social model for pedestrian simulation based on self-categorisation processes during an emergency evacuation. We demonstrate the impact of this new model on the behaviour of pedestrians and on evacuation times. In addition to the Optimal Steps Model for locomotion, we add a realistic social model of collective behaviour. c © 2014 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V. Factors Influencing Failure Emergency Evacuation in Work Environments during Fire
One of the necessary measures of saving human life in emergency situations, such as fires, is the safe and swift evacuation of people. The prerequisites for this are to anticipate, identify, and eliminate factors preventing people from leaving buildings in a timely and safe manner while moving them to a safe place [1]. The occurrence of errors caused by engineering, design, human, and psycholog...
متن کاملIncorporating Human and Social Behavior in Computational Egress Analysis
Recent studies of past disastrous accidents have shown that human behavior plays a crucial role affecting evacuation time and patterns. For example, in the 9/11 World Trade Center studies, people demonstrated helping behaviors, even towards strangers, while evacuating [1]. Decision to evacuate depends on many human factors, such as presence of authorities and individual’s experience and familia...
متن کاملEvaluation model for emergency evacuation time of population in crowded places
Background and objective: Emergency evacuation is one of the first stages of crisis management, which should be done in the shortest possible time and can have a great effect in reducing the death rate caused by the occurrence of danger. So the purpose of this article is to evaluate the emergency evacuation time of Mehrabad Airport in emergency situations through the simulation of emergency pop...
متن کاملAgent-Based Emergency Evacuation Simulation with Individuals with Disabilities in the Population
Catastrophic events have raised numerous issues concerning how effectively the built environment accommodates the evacuation needs of individuals with disabilities. Individuals with disabilities represent a significant, yet often overlooked, portion of the population disproportionately affected in emergency situations. Incorporating disability considerations into emergency evacuation planning, ...
متن کاملModelling social identification and helping in evacuation simulation
Social scientists have criticised computer models of pedestrian streams for their treatment of psychological crowds as mere aggregations of individuals. Indeed most models for evacuation dynamics use analogies from physics where pedestrians are considered as particles. Although this ensures that the results of the simulation match important physical phenomena, such as the deceleration of the cr...
